Jeanne Carley posted a condolence

I was so sad to learn of John's passing, He was truly a great man and a real loss to not only his family but to his friends and community. My heart goes out to Elizabeth June and her children, especially Mary Kate who I knew from Holy Child School. My husband, Bill Carley, also attended Loyola Academy and was a newsman at the Chicago News bureau and later at the WSJ. We were friends. Bill also died in December 2020 from lung cancer. He would be very sorry to hear about John-- maybe they are together now.
I will pray for John Jeanne M. Carley

John Lane was a great, close friend of my family. Peter Norton and I will forever miss him. We were blessed to have known him. Countless times in dabbling in news at my station I think what would he think of what stories I chose? When I used to also broadcast the local news on some morning show fill-in days I also thought what would he make of the order I ran the stories in? He will be deeply missed by us.

My heartfelt condolences to Bess June and to John’s family. He was my first boss at CBS News and he was a wonderful teacher, mentor and cherished friend. I never met a better newsman or a kinder, warmer person than John. Everyone respected him. Everyone admired him. And everyone loved him. I hope the warmth of happy memories will soon ease the sorrow of his beloved family and his many friends.
