"Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper
of the leaves as you walk down the street. She's
the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers
you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She's the cool
hand on your brow when you're not feeling well.
She's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day.
She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep,
the colors of a rainbow; she is Christmas morning.
Your mother lives inside your laughter. She's the
place you came from, your first home, and she's
the map you follow with every step you take.
She's your first love, your first friend, even your first
enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you
not time, not space... not even death."
- UNKNOWN
My sweet friend, you’ll be missed by many. True friendship is a beautiful feeling. I know because I had that with you.
Thank you for all the memories, the laughter, and the pure joy of being together. I love you and will keep looking for your signs!

I wrote the words below about my oldest and most treasured friend on the occasion of her birthday, when we had been friends for 50 years. Derry and I could talk on the phone for 5 hours, and never run out of words. One day it took us almost an hour to say goodbye and finally hang up. We were 16 when we started this journey of a lifetime, and the years went by much too fast.
In the space of one month, Derry was diagnosed with incurable cancer, and we lost her. A light went out in the lives of all the people she touched, and there are so many who miss her. I’m trying so hard to find comfort in the last words we said to each other: I love you.
Derry I will miss you and love you forever, my friend. Thank you for 53 years. ❤️
In November 1969, I walked into an English class at Rye High School. I didn’t know one single, solitary person in the entire school. I stood in the doorway of that classroom, in my peasant blouse and bell bottoms, long hair parted in the middle, my heart threatening to jump out of my chest with fear. A sea of faces turned toward me to see who was the new girl. I frantically looked for a seat, so I could sit down and be as invisible and small as possible. This voice rang out, in the silence. “There is a seat over here by me.” I gratefully walked over to that seat, and smiled a very shaky smile at the pretty girl with the beautiful long brown hair parted in the middle just like mine, and the peasant blouse and blue jeans just like mine, and whispered, “Thank you.”
Fifty years later, I want to say it again. Thank you, Derry Mitchell Aloia . Thank you for fifty years of friendship, for secrets shared and promises kept, for fifty years of laughs and unstoppable giggles, for sharing our children, and my maternity clothes. For two magical occasions to bestow a frosty cold vanilla shake, for advice, for your boundless understanding and compassion, for always ALWAYS having each other’s backs, for understand why having a Mimi matters so much, for laughing about Wednesday’s, and painting the kitchen - AGAIN. For sharing grandbaby stories, for not having to say a single word and knowing exactly what’s in each other’s heart and on our minds. For having the same taste in coffee tables, for still laughing uncontrollably with the same results but for different reasons. For fifty years of one of us being 6 months older than the other, and one of us getting Medicare first. Fifty years of kvetching and venting. Fifty years of laughs and tears. Fifty years of treasured memories and friendship.
Today I celebrate YOU, your birthday, our friendship, and my beloved Oxford comma, of which Little Nora would be inordinately proud. Happy Happy Birthday my friend. May your next trip around the sun be your best ever. I love you. ❤️
Derry, you always said you liked my writing. Every word of this comes from my heart.
With love always,
Alex

From teenagers to adults to becoming parents and Grandparents we have shared ups and downs and so many fun get togethers. Life continues and memories never disappear. They bring us joy and always stay in our heart and we can recall them fondly at any moment we wish to.
I know I will see you again at the celestial Bar and we will cheer to all our past blessings.
Love
