Tom and I became best friends when we worked together at White & Case in the late 1960s, a friendship which lasted over the many years since. In the course of a lifetime a person usually has many friends, but only a few which he considers his best friends. For me, Tom was one of mine. I am so saddened to hear of Uncle Tom's passing. He was a wonderful person and uncle, a man of deep substance and strength. He was the glue of the Butler family, bringing family together and creating unforgettable memories. Uncle Tom always reminded me of my mother, his sister Margaret who passed away before him. Not only did they resemble each other, they had that same strength of spirit and kindness, and such a solid, dependable presence. Uncle Tom will be so very missed. Sending love and prayers to all the family who loved him and were fortunate to have him in their lives. He is now with my mother and his brothers Marty and Timmy and his parents. To my Aunt Barbara and the entire Butler family: My heartfelt condolences to all of you. A man who touched so many lives. Thirty-five years ago my Aunt met the love her life. She was and continued to be the happiest I have ever seen her. She was treated with love and respect and shown the world and had many fun and loving memories while doing it. I eventually called him “Uncle” Tom and would address the card AB & UT. When I met him, we instantly had something major in common – how much we cared for Barbara and that we both worked in NYC law firms. He would tell me stories about things he experienced and the work he was doing with such passion. He truly loved what he did and being a litigator. He was always there to assist with a job application, legal issue or anything else. He was never too busy to help. He was kind to all of my family, helped all with a happy heart. He always talked about his children and their families with a big smile and with so much love and pride. I know my Aunt was very happy to get to know and have relationships with his children and their significant others, their children and their pups. Uncle Tom was a joy to be around -- always fun, full of adventure, a true gentleman, there to give advice and sharply-dressed :-).
To say he will be sorely missed is an understatement. My family thanks him for all the happiness he brought to our Aunt and all he did for many of us with a happy and giving heart! We will be forever grateful for him and all the happy memories we had in NJ, NYC, Millbrook and FL (and for My Mom, CA, Vegas and Italy too). Rest in peace dear Uncle Tom. Love Always, Christine

To Barbara, Michael, Chris, Tim, David, Thomas, Deirdre, Alex and all the spouses, partners and grandchildren who have lost such a special person this week...my deepest sympathy and condolences for this difficult loss. I was heartbroken to hear the news tonight of Uncle Toms passing. He lives large in my memories. He was a wonderful Uncle, brother and human. He had a fierce and tender persona. Family meant so much to him and that always made such an impact on me. He had a beautiful life and touched many. I hope you all can take comfort in the wonderful memories of your time with him and all that he leaves behind. I believe he is at peace with his sister (my mother), his parents and brothers. Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss... Our thoughts are with you Barbara and all the Butler family during this difficult time. At the time of my parent's deaths, I was only about 20. Thomas didn't know me, I was just a friend of Timothy's from NYU, but even so, Tom went way out of his way, absolutely and entirely, without expectation of anything from me, to help me with the estate and associated legal matters.
